Birthday Party Entertainer - Brisbane, Gold Coast
As a Birthday Party Entertainer I've been providing children's entertainment in Brisbane and the Gold Coast for for nearly fifteen years. Tens of thousands of kids have laughed their way through my magic and juggling shows. Here's the thing: as they watch me I'm also watching them. I've had a unique platform to see first hand how children react to different styles of entertainment. Often I'm booked with other forms of entertainment. I know what works and what leaves them yawning and I'm happy to share those observations with you.
When considering Children's Entertainment (although I'm Brisbane based I've performed in the USA, England, Timor and South Africa and I'm confident children's audiences are pretty much the same the world over), you can group children thus:
- 2 to 3 year olds
- 4 to 7 year olds
- 8 to 12 year olds
2 to 3 year olds
What a challenge this age group is to entertain. They wander around most of their waking moments in a state of wonder and amazement so they're a tough audience to impress IF you can keep them in the one place. As a magician I never take a 2 or 3 year old booking because they simply don't get it. Big friendly tip: Save your money until they are older.
Don't get a jumping castle. It always ends in tears. These little ones don't have the co ordination to not collide every other moment. They do love puppet shows with colourful characters and lots of singing. Farmyard petting zoos that come to you are terrific for this age. Just make sure you have lots of hand wipes available to appease Mums concerned about germs.
4 to 7 year olds
Three words sum up what 4 to 7 year old entertainment for children should be: Silly, Silly, Silly. With this age it's all about the journey, not the destination. Slap stick comedy, mispronouncing names and words, getting genders mixed up. Kids go nuts over this stuff. The best children's entertainer for this is the birthday party magician. Now of course I would say that, I am one. It is not the only choice for party entertainment. I wouldn't want my own children having a party magician every year. But every child should have a magic show on their birthday, at least once. Why? Because kids just LOVE magic shows. If you are going to do it, do it while they are 4,5,6,or 7 years old.
This age love jumping castles and have all the motor skills to keep it fairly incident free. Organised Sports Game parties are quite good but they do need space, they can feel a bit too much like school and you better have a back up if it rains. Reptile shows are certainly memorable and are weather proof.
8 to 12 year olds
8 to 12 year olds terrify most performers. At this age kids 'feel' they are grown up and back up at any suggestion they are intellectually still children. Theirs is a world of trumpeting new found knowledge and giggling over bodily functions. In their minds they are no longer babies and they'll respect you for acknowledging it. I've had nothing but fun with this age. No big secret. I wow them with skill and engage them with empathy and respect. This age love my hands on Balloon Twisting Experiences that are combined with edgier magic shows full of CHALLENGE.
