Make a name for yourself with this card trick!
The Bob magic trick is one of those rare tricks where you get so much for so little.
For so little:
skill required, oh, let's say 'none'
cost - basically a pack of cards
effort to make - you should knock this over within about twenty minutes
worry - this is almost self working. Just follow the steps and it works.
you get
credited with having pretty cool magic ability
amazed looks on the faces of your audience
a quirky trick that is very different to almost all card tricks out there
visual appeal and interest which means it plays well for larger audiences. Great for when you want to build a crowd.
audience participation - crucial for keeping an audience interested
intrigue - you state that you are going to do something amazing and unusual and you do.
fast reset
I started using this trick about six or seven years ago when I was busking. (Don't confuse busking with street magic. Both are done in the same place - on the street or in crowded public places - but where as street magic is more like ambushing people to show off your magic skills, busking means gathering a crowd, entertaining them, then cleverly getting them to pay you for your performance)
This Bob Magic trick is a perfect busking trick. Once I had a small group gathered I would call out to others passing by to come on over and see something amazing, 'it'll take but a few short moments of your time' I would reassure them.
I'd ask a volunteer to hold onto the deck of cards while they merely thought of one card in the deck. It could have been any one of the 52 cards in the deck that they wanted. To make sure I couldn't interfere with the cards in anyway I asked them to secure the pack ibn a pair of salad/BBQ tongs and hold them above their head to keep them away from my sneaky hands. This had nothing to do with the trick as such, but what it did was attract other people's attention as they passed by. They would think to themselves, 'what is that person doing with those?' It would act as a draw to pull more people in. Why is this important? because the larger your audience while busking, the more money you are likely to get at the end of your show.
The rest on this Bob Card trick is not instantaneous but it take only about 10 seconds and can be done in your hands as you are walking and moving around. You don't have to wait until you are hidden from view to do it.
The basic plot of this routine goes back to Fred Lowe's "Christened Reverse." It seeems that over the years many methods have been created to do this trick. It turns out that Trevor Duffy reinvented a version that was created by Phil Goldstein in the early 1980s, entitled "Final Fred."
That routine had its debut in a lecture at the 1985 FISM convention in Madrid. The issue of this prior invention has now been discussed by Duffy and Goldstein, along with the ironic coincidence of its title, and they have agreed to market an effect called "Phil".
I have independently reinvented this bob magic trick myself. I love playing with words and names so the question, 'what's the name of your card' started my creative ideas running. I had never seen the other versions until recently and don't even know if they use the double sided tape idea? So sorry to anyone who has already come up with this bob magic trick idea. Let me know and I'll include all yor details here.
This is also a trick that you can personalise for any particular audience you might be playing for. This sort of effort to personalise this trick will pay big dividends for you. I have done it a number of times and and the good will it generates amongst the people present can easily get you booked again for future jobs. To personalise it only costs the price of a new deck of cards, and they don't have to be expensive cards as there really are NO MOVES in this card trick. Any cheap pack of playing cards will work.
I can highly recommend this trick to you. Go on, make a name for yourself with this card trick.
