It didn't happen is Brisbane, it was Perth and is a bit of a legendary story amongst Brisbane magicians.

This was told by a visiting Perth magician who was lecturing to local magicians on the art of birthday party shows. This guy had been around and had come up against all types of disruptions you can experience entertaining for children. He was very generous in imparting some of his special child control techniques he kept in reserve for those special moments.

Driving to this particular child's birthday it was a hot day so he had his car window down. He was still half a block away from the address and he already began to hear a ruckus. There was no doubt where the party was or that it had begun. Following the noise to the back of the house he was greeted with about twenty five 7 year old boys running amok at this party. Over to the side were a group of mothers sipping champagne. He approached the group. The mother of the birthday child showed little interest in his arrival and gestured for him to 'do his stuff', which he he did.

He used his 7 year old boy round up technique and had them all sitting ready for the magic show. At this stage he wasn't phased as he had 'seen it all before'. How wrong he was. Within thirty seconds the boys started chanting. This was something he had never heard before in nearly 30 years of children's entertainment. It was loud and definite. It was, "F*** OFF MAGICIAN, F*** OFF MAGICIAN"

Momentarily stunned, he regained himself and looked to the parents who, though they could obviously hear, were indifferent. He told us his secret kid's magician technique for regaining control. It always worked he told us....except this time. Within the minute they were chanting again.

Without saying a word he packed his gear and started to leave. Now he had the mother's attention. She saw nothing untoward with the children's behaviour but his behaviour, that of leaving her with no entertainment, was unacceptable. He smiled, drove home, found the cheque she had previously posted, tore it up and mailed it back to her.

Ask any children's entertainer and you'll get the same answer: It's usually not the kids, it's the parents who are the problem.

But don't worry if you are a parent of a boys party in Brisbane or the Gold coast, I've never seen or heard of that happening here. By the way, in case you were wondering, these 7 year old boys attended one of Perth's exclusive schools.
