Strange Playing Card Facts

Make Your Magic Show Interesting Too!

You can use these playing card facts to help smooth out your magic show. We've talked about using segues to smoothly go from one trick to another. Here is an idea that you can use to go from one card trick to another AND give people some fun knowledge that few people know.

Just say you have finished one card trick then you say, 'Oh, I'm so sorry, we should have counted the cards before we started ...

If you want to check that you have a full deck you don't need to count them, you can SPELL them. Look, if I deal one card for each letter of each card from A--C--E through to K--I--N--G. You begin dealing by the cards down: three cards for ACE, three cards for TWO, five cards for THREE etc. and strangely the fifty second card dealt will fall on the G of KING.

  • ace 3
  • two 3
  • three 5
  • four 4
  • five 4
  • six 3
  • seven 5
  • eight 5
  • nine 4
  • ten 3
  • jack 4
  • queen 5
  • king 4
  • = 52
An oddity in itself but it gets more curious. "Does anyone speak French," you ask?

  • as 2
  • deux 4
  • trois 5
  • quatre 6
  • cinq 4
  • six 3
  • sept 4
  • huit 4
  • neuf 4
  • dix 3
  • valet 5
  • reine 5
  • roi 3
  • = 52
and Dutch.

  • ass 3
  • twee 4
  • drie 4
  • veir 4
  • vyf 3
  • zes 3
  • zeven 5
  • acht 4
  • nrgen 5
  • tien 4
  • boer 4
  • vrouw 5
  • heer 4
  • = 52

Then go on to say, 'I think we've established that there are indeed 52 cards in the deck but I'm only going to use four of them for this next trick.'

Again you have found a way to break the boring and for my next trick. At the same time you have have entertained them, given them some playing card facts that they can impress their friends with as well.

Now of course you don't have to write this all out at the time, just explain the basic facts with a few examples then say after the show you will show them in detail that it is in fact true.
