Strong Magic Book Review

Strong Magic is a book on how to be entertaining by using magic. It is a nuts and bolts approach to getting you to understand the technique of being entertaining, that is the theatrical and psychological techniques you need to employ to elicit the kind of reaction you want from your audience.

Does this book succeed in teaching you this? YES YES YES. This book covers so much ground. You might think it is a theory book but you'd be wrong. It has terrific practical application. It's 380 or so pages are broken into 4 major parts:

  • The Effect
  • The Character
  • The Act
  • The Audience

      Expect to cover topics like:

      • Planting suggestions
      • Gambling
      • Interest catchers like The Intriguing Question
      • Surprise and Suspense
      • Twist Endings
      • Tension / Anticipation
      • Finding Your Character
      • What You Wear
      • Developing A Style
      • Timing
      • Audience interaction
      • Qualities of a Good Assistant
      • The Psychology of Heckling
      • Screw Ups

Darwin Ortiz is one of the world's top sleight of hand experts. He knows his stuff. He is employed by major casinos to consult on cheating, more so the ways of spotting a cheat. He is also a real thinker about every aspect of making a trick an unforgettable experience.

What's more this book is really easy to read. He illustrates ideas with practical tricks that you may or may not know. It doesn't really matter as he writes descriptive and relatively lively prose.

I treasure Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz. I have read it from cover to cover three times already and I know I will read it again and again. I don't set out to re read but everytime I just get sucked into the wealth of knowledge it gives up. You cannot help but be a better magician by simply reading this book.
